Jon Y - Master of All Things Ethical!

Postby Captain Funbags » November 7th, 2007, 9:56 pm

That's right! I am on the University of Baltimore Ethics team. I am proud to say my philosophy professor asked me to participate after just a couple weeks in class. Practice for the team has taken up a good amount of time, and is essentially a fifth class for me, but I am having a good time.

This weekend is the local Ethics Bowl competition at UB. We face Notre Dame, UMBC, and Navy in our tournament. Next weekend I fly to Chapel Hill, North Carolina for the regionals,, against some 60-odd schools from the southeast. Good times! Meet some southern ladies! :D

I also purchased a kick-ass suit for the occasion. It's a navy pinstripe from Nautica, and I might just have to go against my nature and be cocky for a second - I look good in it, baby! Of course, the look was inspired by Daniel Craig in Casino Royale, so thank you Mr. Bond. I'll have to post a pic later.

Root for me on Saturday! I start at 8:30 a.m., and I wan't more then anything to dominate Navy!

This is Captain Funbags reminding you to stay ethical kids. Just ask yourself: What Would Jon Do? 8-)

I ask myself that all the time. Then I do the opposite.
Let me tell you a joke...

Very cool Mr. Funbags. What exactly do ethics teams do for competition?

We were givn 12 cases to study, all with at least one ethical dilemma presented in them. For the competition, we present the dilemmas of one of those cases (randomly assigned), and the risks and benefits of possible courses of action to correct the dilemma. The opposing team critiques our presentaion, then we rebut their critique. The judges may then ask questions, and points are awarded for all phases. Then the opposing team goes through the same steps, with us critiquing them. Most points at the end of the day wins.

A case example: A female college athlete doesn't want to have the Nike Swoosh logo on her uniform, because she doesn't agree with the business practices of Nike: paying kids in Pakistan $.06/hr to sew soccer balls for example. The college tells her she has to wear the logo as part of her jersey, and Nike says that the $.06/hr is better than what the kids' other options are.
